Integrating Sketchfu in Writing

As a homeschooling mom and educator, I am always looking for meaningful ways to weave our children's passions into the learning process.  Our 4th grader loves to animate and draw!  Yesterday, we created a fun lesson integrating Sketchfu with creative writing.

For this activity, our daughter had to write a "bio" for a character created using Sketchfu.  Everyone, I would like to introduce you to "Crazy Cowgirl." By clicking the image, you will be taken to the Sketchfu site where you can view how she was created.

This lesson can be extended by having children develop a story plot involving the character they just created.  Cory Green's website has great tips for young writers.  When complete, publish the new masterpeice using Google Docs.

Although this was an unplanned, spur-of-the-moment activity, our daughter had a great time and is motivated to take it to the next level.  As a matter of fact, I have a feeling I will be publishing "The Adventures of Crazy Cowgirl" really soon.  This activity is an excellent example of illustrating how important it is to let students take ownership in their learning.  Get the creative juices flowing and prepare to be amazed at the mind of child!
